Clarification on Monologs

Tomorrow to need to have both of your monologs as you will be reading them out to the class. You do not need to memorize it...yet.

Apologies for the late post.

Grade 8 Science: Fluids Practice Test and Homework Check

Make sure the unit questions are completed between this week and next. I will start checking after Monday during your science periods.

Link to unit outline: http://bedfordroom16.blogspot.ca/2013/11/science-grade-7-and-8-unit-outlines.html

There is a vocabulary section at the bottom of the outline.

Practice Test Questions:

Define:

Viscosity, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Density, Hydrometer

Fill in the Blank:

Two liquids are poured into the same glass. After sitting, one liquid settles to the bottom. This
liquid is _________ than the top liquid.

There are 2 bottles of chocolate sauce. One is kept in the refrigerator, and the other in the
cupboard. When I try to pour the chocolate sauce out, the sauce from the _____ is
less viscous.

A boat can float because water pushes up on it. This force is called ___________.

Steel is denser than water, but because boats are mostly filled with _________, it allows
them to float.

Explain why solids that flow (eg jello) are not fluids.

Which fluid can be compressed more, liquid or gas. Explain your choice using the particle
theory.

Two items with the same mass are placed in identical water tanks. Item 1 displaces 50mL
of water. Item 2 displaces 65mL of water. Explain why there is a difference in the water
displaced. What can be inferred about the density of the 2 items?

An object is dropped into two types of fluids. In fluid A, the object sinks. In fluid B, the
same object floats. Using proper terms and particle theory, explain what happened.

How would you use water displacement to find the mass of an object? (The density of the
water is 1g/mL)

Give an example of viscosity as it is used in the real world. Be specific and explain your
understanding.

Foam Boards

24 foam boards are available for purchase if required.  $2/board.

Today we watched two astonishing monologues.

Post a comment - which one did you like and why? Have your comments posted by Sunday.

Assignment:

Choose and print two monologues. It will be best to copy/paste the text and double-space it on a page. We will start doing some emotional analysis tomorrow, period 5. Expect to have these memorized and presented within two weeks.

This week the science team will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please clear your schedules

Reminder the competition is on 28 Jan.

Grade 7 Science - Make up Day #1

Students who need to make up:

paper cup bridge

1m challenge

will be able to do so on Tuesday at lunch. Please email the science teacher as soon as possible.

You will need at least 30mins for each task.

There will only be two other make up days.

Grade 8 Science - Fluid Design Challenge

Keep in mind that the rubric will be updated.

Grade 8 Science and Technology Unit 3
Understanding Matter and Energy Culminating Design Challenge
Challenge Objectives
-          Demonstrate an understanding of the uses of pressurized systems
-          Demonstrate an understanding of a "sketch-to-design" process
Assessment:
-          Sketches that include Top, Front, Side, and 3-Dimensions and approximate dimensions
-          Written procedure/instructions submitted at the time of completion
-          Working model
Conditions:
- students may be in either pairs or triads
- sketches must be both peer and  teacher approved prior to construction
Projection Options:
A - The Claw
Students are to design a claw which they operate by controlling a pressurized system. The Claw must be able to securely grip a ping-pong ball and then elevate the ball as high as possible.
Provided: ping-pong ball, up to 3 pairs syringes, tubing, popsicle sticks
Required: foam board, hot glue guns sticks, tape, storage box
This is an example of the project at the university level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du-L-VPPezA
B - Labyrinth
Based on a Greek design by Daedalus, you are to create a marble-maze board game which is suspended by a structure of your design. The syringe pairs allow the board surface to pitch up and down, moving a marble through a maze. The maze may have pit-fall traps where the ball falls out. You may consider making the game with multiple levels. Consider the placement of the syringe/actuators; is there a way to move on syringe that would allow you to move the ball laterally and longitudinally across your board?
This is an example of a highly complex one using pneumatics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78ucwJMDe7o

Grade 7 Science Portfolio Update

By this time students should start working on their portfolios, as there are several parts to it.

Each activity must include:

Title

Labelled Diagram (neatly drawn)

1 paragraph summary which describes the activity as well as what was learned/discovered.

By now most students will have completed:
- paper cup bridge

Students who missed any activities must stay tuned to the blog as in two weeks there will be only 3 possible make-up sessions during lunch to come in and complete missed activities.

7A Ski forms:

8 students from 7A are still required to submit their ski forms on Monday, 13 Jan 2014.

Grade 7 and 8 Science tests

All tests were returned to students this week. They need to be signed and returned by Friday, 17 Jan 2014.

Language - Point of View notes and I am David

This week we started I am David.

Students will write a point-of-view discussion for each chapter. Students will select an event/decision/discussion involving several characters who may have different opinions or roles.

The Title/Heading, which includes page number.

3-4 sentences describing the event/decision/dialogue.

A list of all characters involved as well as their opinion, position, role, or stake.

It should not be more than half a page (hand written), including the space needed to format your entry:

Title:

Summary:

List of Characters and their Point of View:

This activity will become more complex once we complete the first half of the book (based on the number of chapters) by adding a citation that describes or explains the character's point of view.

Grade 7 Science - Video and Update on Structures

The scaffolding video may be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh1Z-i14-h0

During this week's single period, we will do the bungee jump activity. Students are asked to bring in an action figure of sorts (the heavier the better) as we will be problem-solving with elasticity and tension forces.

Each student is reminded to have 1 sheet of foam board for the Desk Design activity.

7A Sticker Marks

Today 7A students received a sticker listing many assessment results in one location. There were some formula errors when building a new spreadsheet to complete the merge. The mark written onto the test is the standing mark, vice the error for Unit 2 math test results. My apologies for the error.

Grade 8 Cell Biology Test and Viscosity Lab reports returned

This week students are receiving their cell biology unit test, as well as a sticker with a summary of all of their marks from the Cell Biology unit.

Signed tests returned by Friday.

Grade 7 Science Tests Returned

Today students received a sticker with all 5 unit 2 assessment marks, as well as their Part 1 and 2 tests. Parents are kindly requested to sign both tests and return by Friday.

The Sus Scrofa quiz mark will be dropped from the science average. Students will have an opportunity to complete another science-related Knowledge/Understanding assessment later in the academic year.

Note to 7A students

Your teacher is currently suffering from email outages for whatever reason. Emails are being sent but seemingly not recieved. Computers have been reformatted aand received a stern talking-to, and everything should be back to normal soon. Many of you are expecting emails, so your patience is appreciated.

Hope your break is refreshing.

Attn Ski Athletes in Grade 7 and 8

Please email the science teacher all confirmed and tentative race, practice,  and conditioning dates ASAP where you will miss class. A composite calender will be crafted and given to the 7/8 teaching and rotary team.
