Language: historical character research: 3-5 talking points about Dewey and Roosevelt: pushed to Friday
Math: create your own question. On a half-sheet of paper, or two index cards, write your name on one side of both of them, and then create a question and write it on one card. Write the solution on the other.
Today we looked at solving equivalent statements.
4a + 7= 5a + 1
9b -21 = 6b
6c + 7 = 4c + 25
2d + 3 = 4d - 4
We discussed that manipulating the statement to isolate the variable is more accurate, and a better use of our time, than the guess and check method.
Kick Flip (Inverse Operation)
4a + 7 = 5a + 1 (the right side has the larger "a" term, so let's kick the 4a over. 4a is positive)
7 = 5a +1 - 4a (now in order to isolate the variable we need to "group like terms" and the 1 is not "like")
7 - 1 = 5a - 4a (simplify)
6 = a
See-saw (Balanced Operation) what you do to one side you shall do to the other
4a + 7 = 5a + 1 (the right side has the larger "a" term, so let's remove 4a from the left)
4a + 7 - 4a = 5a + 1 - 4a (better simplify this before it gets messy)
7 = 5a - 4a + 1
7 = a + 1 (isolate the variable, then simplify again)
7 - 1 = a + 1 - 1
6 = a
