Plans for the rest of the week

Posted below are the rough day plans left for the occasional teacher. You should only need minimal supplies (pencil case etc) for the next few days.

As always, do good work. Keep up your reputation for being focused, engaged, and a joy to teach. Avoid setting fires to things.



DAY PLAN                 Tuesday June 24, Day 5

Period 1
0850-0930
Condo Project - students are currently in design groups working on their condo project. They are quite confident with both exacto knives and glue guns. There are brown wood masonite boards to be laid down on each table for them to work with. The glue guns and their respective extension cords are all in the red bin. I encourage you to wander about and ask about their design choices. I was also working on my own model, which you are more than welcome to continue.
Period 2
0930 - 1000
Prep
We have classroom supervision duty from 1000 - 1015 in our classroom.
Period 3-4
1015-1135
Continue with the Condo Project - have them clean the room well prior to lunch. They know how to do an effective job of cleaning the classroom
Period 5-6
1240 - 1350
Language: National Geographic Article study
Please lead a discussion to review the ideas of:
- main idea and summary
- inferencing
- perspective and point of view
- making connections

Students will then select an article of their choice (please ensure it is a substantial article). You may want to "screen" some articles prior to them selecting their articles. These two periods should be focused on writing a paragraph that summarizes the article, a second paragraph that includes points of view from the article as well as those which are missing, and a third paragraph on making connections. Each paragraph should be approximately 7-8 sentences each. This is not homework, and will be continued tomorrow.

Period 7
1350 - 1435
Outdoor activity. You are encouraged to take the students outdoors to enjoy some fresh air for 30 minutes. There may be outdoor sports equipment available. Please call the office to let them know you are leaving and when you return. Please exit and enter the school from the main doors and the north staircase.
Period 8
1435 - 1510
Mutation Game:
Materials required: 1 sheet of paper folded laterally into 8 sections; pencil

I encourage you to play this game with them. There should be several students who recall how to play.

Essentially it is a warped version of pictionary. Students fan-fold their paper so that only 1/8th of a strip is visible. On the first strip they write the name of an animal, then pass it to someone else (right or left). That person tries to draw the animal on the second 8th, and folds over their first one (that had the word) out of sight. The third person then tries to guess what the picture is by writing one word, and the once it is passed again, after folding the image out of view, the fourth person will try to make a doodle of what the third person thought to name the second person's doodle (sorry if this sounds like a "who's on first" explanation). You should be able to get through two or three rounds.

Homework: Students are to find two different paper airplane designs online, and have them ready to make tomorrow.

DAY PLAN                 Wednesday June 25, Day 1

Period 1
0850-0930

Prep Please meet with Georgina as there may be many other changes to this day.  She has the report card envelopes, and she will need assistance preparing them

Period 3-4
1015-1135

1240 - 1320
National Geographic Article: Have students continue their work on their summaries. They will be presenting them to the class tomorrow. They also need to have a "trivia" question that they ask at the end of their presentation.
Period 6
1320 - 1350
Prep
Period 7-8
1350 - 1515
Please lead a discussion to review the 5 basic parts of an airplane (engine, fuselage, landing gear, empennage/tail section, wings) as well as the three different control surfaces (ailerons control roll, elevators control pitch, rudder controls yaw).

Paper is located in the birch/pine cabinet.

In co-genedered groups of 4-5 (they will understand that terminology), students are to each make their own airplanes, and then teach the members of the group how to make the one they selected. If students have the same design, then they are welcomed to experiment by changing the shape. Test flights are not yet permitted. Please strictly enforce this.

Once they have a reasonable amount of planes to test, you could set up the tables as a runway, and students take turns throwing and landing their planes on the runway (distance, stability, consistency could all be ratable qualities).

Please then lead a concluding discussion about their observations as to which design was better.

DAY PLAN                 Thursday June 25, Day 2

Period 1-3
0850-1055

At this point some groups may be nearing completion, if not already completed. The next phase is to create some company paraphernalia (flyers, pamphlets, business cards, etc) promoting their design and layout, as well as their  use of their budget. They are simulating that they are an interior design firm competing for contracts. All of these are to be created by hand rather than computer.
Period 4
1055 - 1135
