Today we discussed the 4 quotes that serve as the foreword to the novel The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/the-greatest-thing-since-sliced/9780061452963-item.html?ikwid=the+greatest+thing+since+sliced+bread&ikwsec=Home&gcs_requestid=0CPjO_LLdnL0CFdE_5wodmlEAAA) as well as our Character's Character Traits (bravery, fearful, determined, instinctive, curious, courageous, positive, frightened).

Post a reply on this blog by matching one character trait with one quote, and explaining why you think it is a good match. Use CREST (cre-t) to support your answer. Include some information about the person who said the quote (add your citations at the end of your post). Your response should be 7-8 sentences.

This will become an ongoing blog discussion. You are expected to have your responses up by Friday.

  1. I think that the character trait, determined, well describes the quote by Ulysses Simpson Grant. I think that this suits the quote because he would "fight it out on this line if it takes all summer." You would need to be determined to fight on one line all summer. You would have to be determined to win. Ulysses Simpson Grant was in the civil war and had a rank higher than any American except George Washington, it takes true determination to make it that far. He also grew up in poverty, living in tough times. But after many years of poverty, and the military he became the 18th president of the united states. He would have to be very determined to go from poverty to one of the most powerful people in the world.

  2. The Character trait "bravery" matches Enda St. Vincent Millays quote "If I ever said, in grief or pride I tired of honest things, I lied." The reason for this is because its not always easy hearing the truth. It takes bravery to face it. But it is better to have the truth told to you than to be fed lies. Enda was born on February 22, 1892 and died on October 19, 1950. She was an American lyrical poet and playwrighter. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and was one of the first women to achieve this award.

  5. I think Ulysses Simpson Grant's quote shows bravery. I think that because he is willing to do all he can to stand up and fight. He also says he will win it as long as it takes. Ulysses Simpson Grant was the 18th American president, he was also a very successful commander in the American civil war. Ulysses Simpson Grant was born on April 27, 1822 and died at July 23, 1885 he died at the age of 63. Grant wanted to protect African Americans and wanted to defeat the ku klux klan. That was some information on Ulysses Simpson Grant and why I think his quote shows bravery

  6. "Life is just one damned thing after another" Frank O'Malley. I think the character trait that fits with this quote is Instinctive. I think this because Frank O'Malley is informed about life and is following his gut when Frank goes through all of these things. I know this because there seems to be a lot going on in his life at that moment. So I think he was just following his gut and trying to push through all of the crap. That is why I think instinctive is a good word from the word bank. So "Life is just one damned thing after another." Is instinctive because of these reasons.

  7. i think the quote by Enda St. Vincent Millay shows bravery. I think this because the quote is saying that even though the truth might not be something you want to hear, it is better than hearing lies. Sometimes you need to be brave to hear the honest truth because it can be something you wont like which can be scary. Enda was born on February 22, 1892. she was a poet and became famous from her peom "Renescence". She won the Pulitzer Prize and was the 3rd women to win it. She died on October 19, 1950.

  8. I believe the the quote by Ulysses Simpson Grant showed the character trait of positivity. He mentions that he would “fight it out on this line if it takes all summer.” Proposing that he will do it. He stays determined and enthusiastic about the experience. This also reflects Ulysses’s personal life. From his humble beginnings as a dedicated soldier at West Point to the united state’s 18th president elected two terms. Maintaining a positive attitude was important because of the many bumps along his path to success. For example after action in Mexican-American war he returned to marry and eventually resign from the military, this was an up for him as he was known as a very skilled horseman. Following this he attempted a career in faming and then real estate, both failed. But keeping his chin up allowed him to achieve great things later on such as his role as colonel and then general in the US civil war and of coarse after many years of hard work, president.

  9. The following is a quote that I believe best relates to me.

"I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself,
than to be crowded on a velvet cushion.
If a man does not keep paces with his companions,
perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.
Let him set to the music which he hears,
    however measured or far away."
    - Henry David Thoreau

There are many traits that could describe this quote, but the one that really shines for me is "positive". This quote makes the best out of a situation. When being alone, most people would think that it's sad. This quote sais the opposite. It states that when you are by yourself, you have more! He also goes on a completely different tangent and sais that if someone can't keep pace with you, then go your own way.

  10. The quote I am choosing is the first one by Henry David Thoreau. I think this quote is very positive. The reason I think this is because it is trying to say that you should follow your own guts. I think this means that you should take your own advice, follow your own path and don`t let other people change your thoughts of how things should go on in your life. I think this is positive because if you let someone else take control of your life it is cancelling out your thoughts and opinions. I think that has a more negative effect to your life but, if you take your own advice you could make your own decisions and do what you think is right. That is why I think that this quote is positive.

  11. The author of the quote that I am choosing is Henry David Thoreau. The character trait that I think best describes this quote is Individuality. The quote talks about being an individual and not doing what everyone else is doing. The author lived his life as an individualist. He left society and went to live a simple life in the woods for a few years. He also was an activist by protesting slavery at the time. I think Thoreau is trying to say that it's okay to be alone and to have different opinions than everyone else and that you should follow your own ideas on how to live your life.

  12. In my opinion, Enda St. Vincent Millay's quote, 'If I ever said, in grief or pride I tired of honest things, I lied." is positive. I think this because, even though the truth is sometimes what you don't want to hear, it is always the best to hear. It's good to always hear the truth because you don't want to be living in lies. This quote is giving the truth itself and trying to promote the idea of how honesty is a positive thing. Enda was a lyrical poet, which means that her poems were about her own emotions. Throughout her career Enda won the Pulitzer Prize for The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver. She also wrote operas. Enda was known as a feminist.

  13. I think that the quote: "I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than to be crowded on a velvet cushion. If a man does not keep paces with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him set to the music which he hears, however measured or far away." is a good match for the character trait: instinctive. I believe this because I think that quote means that you should follow your own path. Or in other words, follow your own instinct. And that you don't have to take what seems like the easier route just because everyone else is. American, Henry David Thoreau's wise words were most probably inspired by his very busy career. He was an author, poet, philosopher, naturalist and more. Also, Thoreau spent a year living by himself in a cabin in the woods, which would explain what he ment when he said in the quote that he would prefer to be on his own. Thoreau followed his own instinct which was to live on his own, unlike the rest of America.

  14. I think the quote "I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer" shows pure determination. Ulysses Simpson Grant is almost stubborn to do what it takes to win. He also kept a great attitude the whole time. He was willing to spend a whole summer of his time to fight for his country. This showed immense bravery and total devotion to his country. He was so determined that he went on to be the 18th president of the United States. He also grew up in poverty which means that it was a tough journey to get as far as he did. This is why I think Grants quote shows total determination and loyalty to his country.

Quote:"Life is just one damned thing after another."
    Frank Ward O'Malley
    Trait: Determine

If I was to pair one of the quotes and one of the character traits, I would pair, "Life is just one damned thing after another," and determine. The reason I would pair these together is that when I first read the quote, it sounds like the person is determine to go through all the problems that is happening. The writer of this quote, Frank Ward O'Malley, might have gone through a lot of troubles and thought that, "Life is just one damned thing after another." Another reason why I chose this quote was because many people could relate to it. Many people go through many problems throughout their lives, and could say one damned thing after another. In conclusion, for these reasons, I chose to pair Frank Ward O'Malley quote, and determine.

  15. I chose Ulysses Simpson Grant's quote. I feel this quote's character trait is determined because its says "I am determined to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer". He is determined to fight for what he believes in. He is determined to win the battle or war (or what ever it is). He stays positive and determined during the experience he is going through. I chose this quote because it shows people to keep going and stay positive. Ulysses Simpson Grant was the 18th president and was military commander so he was probably trying to keep his army positive and determined to win the battle.

  16. My quote is "If I ever said, in grief or pride I tired of honest things, I lied." (Enda st. Vincent Millay) I think the character trait for this quote is determined. It shows the authors determination to find out the truth about everything. Also Enda was always determined to succeed and fought for gender equality. She was born on February 22 1892. Even though she grew to be an acclaimed poet and playwright before in her own words she was very, very poor and very, very merry. Her 4th volume of poems The Harp Weaver won the Pulitzer prize in 1923. During world war 2 she wrote several poems supporting democracy. She died in 1950. Throughout her life Enda S. Vincent Millay was very determined to help gender equality, the growth of feminism, and supported democracy in many of her poems.

  17. I think Ulysses Simpson Grant's quote shows determined. "I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer." means he would fight it out even if it takes a long time. He stays determined throughout everything he goes through. Grant wanted to protect African Americans and wanted to defeat the Ku Klux Klan. That means Ulysses Simpson Grant was determined to keep on fighting for to African Americans and he wouldn't stop even if it took a really long time. Throughout his life, Ulysses was a very successful commander the civil war and had a rank higher than any American except George Washington. He was the 18th president of The United States. Ulysses Simpson Grant says he will win it as long as it takes. It must of been hard going to rough times to being a really powerful guy.

  18. I think that Ulysses Simpson Grant quote shows determined. "I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer." I think the quote is determined because when she says I propose to fight he means he will fight to how ever long the fight will take. When she says out on this line if it takes all summer he means that no matter the condition of the fight or the weather he will fight. He is also saying that he will never give up till the battle is over. He was also positive because by just telling people in battle that there is also hope. By telling them that could motivate his men more to win the battle.

  19. In the famous words of Edna St.Vencent Millay. “If I ever said, in grief or pride, that I tired of things, than I lied”. I think this quote shows determination, Edna is determined to prove to you that she has never said that she tires of things. Edna was born February 2, 1892. In Rockland Maine. Edna died on October 19, 1950 in her 700-acre farm in Austerlitz New York. The home is now a historic landmark called Steepletop. Edna’s fourth book won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, it was called The Ballad of the Harp Weaver. She preferred to be called Vincent, after the St. Vincent hospital in New York City.
